Coinbase FAQ
Does Coinbase report to the IRS?
Yes. Coinbase issues IRS tax forms to US customers, including form 1099-da for sales and exchanges of crypto (from tax year 2025); and form 1099-misc if you earn $600 or more in rewards, such as staking or usdc rewards. The IRS receives a copy, so the activity on those forms needs to appear on your tax return.
Will my Coinbase 1099-DA show cost basis?
Only for crypto bought on Coinbase on or after January 1, 2026 and held there until you sold it. For crypto bought before 2026 or transferred in from another wallet or exchange, Coinbase is not required to report cost basis, and you must calculate it yourself.
Where is Coinbase based?
Coinbase is registered in United States according to CoinGecko's exchange data and has operated since 2012.
Is Coinbase a public company?
Yes. Coinbase is listed on Nasdaq: COIN (since 2021), which means it publishes audited financial statements and is overseen by securities regulators.
