Uniswap proposes VolatilePair and X Layer upgrades
Uniswap Labs proposes upgrades to the VolatilePair Hook on Ethereum and a new fee releaser for X Layer, addressing a bridge incompatibility for UNI burns.
Two infrastructure proposals from Uniswap Labs landed on the Uniswap Governance Forum on November 6, 2026: an upgrade to the VolatilePair Hook on Ethereum, and a replacement fee releaser for X Layer. Both are framed in the RFC as routine governance upkeep, but each touches a live mechanism — one LP-facing, one affecting UNI burn.
The VolatilePair Hook went live on Ethereum on October 14 with the ETH$2,224.32▼0.18%/USDC$0.9997▲0.02% pool. It was built to adjust fees dynamically for volatile pairs. Uniswap Labs wrote on the governance forum that it “was designed to keep value in the pool while quoting a competitive spread, enabling stronger and more consistent returns for LPs.”
The proposed change caps how long a temporary fee can stay active, measured in blocks. On Ethereum, the RFC setsmaxTempFeeBlockGap to 1. The Robinhood Chain deployment already runs the same implementation with a gap of 2, so the Ethereum setting is half that. By the calendar, that is 23 days from the October 14 launch to the November 6 RFC.
Uniswap Labs also notes that volatile pairs drove more than $500 billion in Uniswap volume this year. The figure indicates the scale of trading that the hook could affect, although the RFC does not quantify the volume handled by this hook.
The current VolatilePair Hook proxy on Ethereum is0x000022Ec4eBD6b12294396E852E4C3876b253Cc0. The proposed new implementation address is0xd944fa96798916Fe72161ccaF0F30DF7bb220000. LPs in pools tied to that proxy are directly exposed to whatever governance decides.
The X Layer piece is a different kind of problem. Proposal 95 activated protocol fees on X Layer, Soneium, World Chain, and Zora. But a bridge incompatibility — identified in late September — prevented UNI from being burned on X Layer after fees collected in a TokenJar. The RFC does not give the date on which the fees began accruing.
The fix is a new contract calledAggLayerReleaser, which would route UNI burns over X Layer’s Agglayer token transfer bridge. A separateDecayingThresholdSetter would start the release threshold high and step it down over time, eventually landing at the standard 2,000 UNI threshold specified in the Uniswap Governance Forum RFC. Uniswap Labs expects that decay to complete roughly six days after execution.
What the RFC doesn’t disclose: the current UNI balance sitting in the X Layer TokenJar, and the starting value of the temporary threshold. The amount of UNI queued for release can’t be calculated from the filing alone.
Uniswap Labs describes the broader context in the RFC: “As part of regular governance upkeep, Uniswap Labs reviews the protocol infrastructure that governance owns and brings forward improvements as they are needed.” One proposal limits how long a temporary fee persists for LPs.
Per the governance cadence cited in the RFC, Snapshot voting is set for November 13, 2026, or shortly after, with an onchain vote to follow. For price context only, CoinGecko listed XRP$1.15▼1.76% at $1.16, down 1.8% over 24 hours at the time of the filing — unrelated to either proposal.
