Mt. Gox pushes repayment deadline to 2027 with $2.8B still pending

The Tokyo court has approved October 31, 2027, as the new Mt. Gox repayment deadline. That’s the sixth time this date has moved, and there’s still roughly $2.8 billion in Bitcoin sitting undistributed.

Trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi’s explanation isn’t flashy. “Many rehabilitation creditors still have not received their Repayments because they have not completed the necessary procedures for receiving Repayments,” he wrote — a procedural accounting that, along with the deadline change itself, is documented in Decrypt’s report.

Arkham data cited in that report puts Mt. Gox-linked wallet balances at about 34,388 BTC. The same data shows no transfers out of the estate since June — when the estate moved 10,422.65 BTC, then worth more than $739 million, out of cold storage. The wallets have been quiet since.

At Bitcoin’s current price of $81,364 per CoinGecko, those 34,388 BTC work out to approximately $2,798,088,032, which lines up with the reported figure. This marks the fourth extension since September 2023, following two shorter ones earlier that year, according to Cointelegraph’s timeline. The previous cutoff was October 31, 2026.

Mt. Gox began distributing Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash to creditors in July 2024. By March 2025, more than 19,500 had received repayments. How many remain unpaid, and how the outstanding 34,388 BTC breaks down across claim types, isn’t established in available documents.

The estate’s visible pool has moved markets before. When the trustee announced in June 2024 that distributions would start the following month, Bitcoin fell as low as $61,060 — a drop of 6.5% in a single day. That’s historical context, nothing more.

Markus Levin, co-founder of XYO, put it plainly: the recurring announcement is “more of a recurring headline than a real source of downside pressure.” For creditors who haven’t finished required procedures, the reality is more concrete — a deadline of October 31, 2027, and 34,388 BTC still in estate wallets.
