Aave weighs USDe listing on X Layer
Aave is considering listing Ethena's USDe on Aave V3 on X Layer, but LlamaRisk requires $5 million in local DEX liquidity first.
The primary governance assessment for adding Ethena’s USDe to Aave V3’s X Layer instance is now open on the governance forum, with risk and technical review from LlamaRisk. The firm’s position: conditional support. Ethena has to seed DEX liquidity before the market opens.
The condition has a number: $5 million, supplied by the Ethena team. LlamaRisk’s view is that local trading depth without it simply isn’t there. If Ethena meets it, USDe holders get another lending venue on X Layer and Aave users get access to the asset.
USDe already shows up across multiple Aave markets, V3 and V4 both. X Layer would extend that footprint to a network where USDe’s secondary market is, at the moment, nearly nonexistent. The governance assessment puts the current X Layer USDe supply at 62.78 USDe as of October 12, 2026.
That number needs some unpacking. Daily X Layer supply peaked at 542.72 USDe on January 3, 2025. The drop to 62.78 represents a decline of 479.94 USDe — roughly 88.4%, per the assessment’s own math: (542.72 - 62.78) / 542.72 = 0.884. The $5 million liquidity condition is being applied to a market that never meaningfully launched.
The bridge is the main risk surface
Native USDe minting isn’t available on X Layer. The token arrives via LayerZero’s Omnichain Fungible Token standard, with Ethereum as the canonical chain holding the OFT Adapter. The X Layer OFT deployed on June 14, 2024, and currently has a peer configured only for Ethereum.
Transfer settings differ by direction. Messages leaving X Layer require 6,000 block confirmations before execution — about 100 minutes. Messages leaving Ethereum need 15 confirmations, closer to three minutes. Both directions carry a cap of 10 million USDe per one-hour window.
Control over the X Layer OFT sits with a custom timelock controller carrying a 24-hour delay, administered by the Ethena Multisig, a 5/10 Safe multisig. According to the governance assessment, the only instant-effect authority the timelock holds over USDe on X Layer is setPeer.
That function is handled differently from everything else. It’s whitelisted for the Ethena 5/10 multisig, so the multisig can add or remove peers from the OFT mesh without waiting out the 24-hour delay. The Ethena Multisig is also the sole authority over changes to setPeer itself. There’s no separate pauser mechanism for incident response on X Layer.
For anyone holding USDe as collateral, that gap matters. A peer change clears without the timelock delay, and an emergency pause doesn’t exist as a distinct tool. The proposal’s next concrete dependency is the $5 million DEX-liquidity commitment — the assessment gives no date for when that capital actually shows up.
Timelocks cover half the mesh
USDe is registered at 34 LayerZero V2 endpoints. Sixteen networks run under an EthenaTimelockController; the other 16 are controlled directly by multisigs, no timelock. That’s roughly 47.1% timelock coverage across the OFT mesh.
The two largest USDe balances outside Ethereum both sit on networks without timelock protection. Solana holds 473.4 million USDe in its OFT. TON holds 168.9 million under a 5/11 multisig. Berachain holds another 13.2 million, also without a timelock. Those three untimelocked positions combined: 655.5 million USDe (473.4M + 168.9M + 13.2M = 655.5M). Whether timelock coverage extends to Solana and TON — and when — the governance document doesn’t say.
Backing and market mechanics
Ethena describes USDe as a dollar-pegged synthetic stablecoin backed by a diversified portfolio. It’s not fiat-redeemable and carries no deposit claim. Holding USDe by itself generates no yield; yield accrues to sUSDe, the ERC-4626 vault share received when staking USDe.
As of October 12, 2026, the assessment reports $4.76 billion in backing against 4.76 billion USDe outstanding. The allocation breaks down as 36.9% to DeFi lending, 24.9% to liquid stablecoins, 17.6% to crypto basis, 14.3% to institutional lending, and 6.0% to real-world assets.
Direct minting and redemption on Ethereum are limited to counterparties that have cleared Ethena’s KYC/KYB checks. The mint contract caps issuance at 200 million USDe per block; redemption is capped at 20 million per block. Accepted assets include USDC, USDT, PYUSD, USDG, USDm, and USDtb at per-asset caps, alongside DAI at a 2 million USDe cap. The Ethereum adapter currently escrows 2.28 billion USDe.
The X Layer proposal follows a September 2026 USDe review for Avalanche that examined backing composition, reserve fund health, and counterparty exposure. On X Layer, the gating question is narrower: $5 million in DEX liquidity from Ethena, no timeline attached.
